Welcome to Journalism 2. You'll be developing reporting and writing skills over a range of news and feature stories including education, race, crime and politics. You will sharpen critical thinking, news judgment, street smarts and ethical sensitivity. You will learn teamwork. you will practice deadline writing in class and also spend time on the street, in your neighborhood, on assignment.
Your neighborhood will be your lab. You should start thinking about listening posts -- community hangouts where you can really tap into your neighborhood and get folks to talk for real, not provide nice "sound bites."
You will be keeping a reporter's notebook and recording your observations and experiences in a class blog. I want you to explore the people of your neighborhood, cultural traits and leading issues in your community. Cultivate a list of sources and zero in on community attributes and issues.
Become a street reporter. Keep track of memorable profiles and moments. I'd also like to keep a folder of events taking place in the area -- in your neighborhood -- so please send handouts, info, my way and I'll keep a master file for class.
